Columbus, Cabrini, Indigenous Peoples, and Me
I meant to post this link to my book Marked Men on Indigenous Peoples Day since my book aims to honor Silas Soule, a soldier who defied orders and refused to let his men participate in the Sand Creek Massacre. I got distracted from posting when I discovered that here in Colorado, Columbus Day, which Indigenous Peoples Day was meant to replace, had been co-opted by yet another replacement holiday: Mother Cabrini Day.Read More

New Fiction in O:JA&L
I haven’t published fiction in a while, so I’m happy to point to a new short story in the beautiful online journal, Open: Journal of Arts & Letters. It’s called “A Real Comedian,” and I hope it inspires a smile or two. Let me add that the editors of O:JA&L do a great job of curating the artwork displayed with every text on the site, which makes it a pleasure to read.Read More

Chinese Fire
My good friend Joe Nigg, wrote an extraordinary 2016 book, The Phoenix: An Unnatural Biography of a Mythical Beast. It includes a chapter on “Poetic Fire,” which itself includes a poem of mine—rooted in the phoenix image—called “Revenant.” Now, between Joe’s inclusion of “Revenant” and the book’s appearance in print, I revised the poem, making several minor and a few substantial changes. In particular, the arc of the second version became … well, darker … and it was that second, darker version that subsequently appeared in my collection The World As Is: New & Selected Poems, 1972-2015.Read More
