I re-read or read classics I never got around to every year now. This year, like Wayne, Dostoevsky. Also E.M. Forster, and a surprising delight, short stories by Stephen Vincent Benét. But Camus—never read anything but The Stranger. He’s now on the 2023 list. Thanks, Joe.

I have found in my old age what a pleasure it can be to return to favorites and re-read them–astonished by how fresh and invigorating or bracing they can be 20 or 30 or even 50 years later. Given my experience and the state of the world (of which I’m rather weary), the old favorites rarely disappoint and seem as new as if I’d never read them. Steinbeck is an example. Sometimes, I finally pick up a novel I “should” have read in college or grad school or somewhere else along the line, and sink into it–Dostoevsky is one of those. Wow!
