On his very entertaining blog, the wonderful poet Bill Knott posted his top 10 poet choices for the Nobel Prize. It’s a fun exercise! Here are my ten, in descending order of age (on the theory that we should honor them before they’re dead):
Nicanor Parra
Andrea Zanzotto
Carolyn Kizer
W. S. Merwin
Thomas Kinsella
Adrienne Rich
Hans Magnus Enzensberger
Adonis (pen name of Ali Ahmad Sa’id)
Tomas Tranströmer
Shuntaro Tanikawa
Ko Un
Not that anybody asked….
A good list. I was surprised and delighted to see Thomas Kinsella among these, as Kinsella, one of the great poets of our time, is not as well known as most of the others. A shame that must be corrected.
