Bristlecone Magazine Returns!
After a hiatus in which the editors of Bristlecone worked to re-imagine the magazine’s PDF/blog format, the new web-based May 2024 issue is available at https://www.bristleconemag.com. In this issue you’ll find new work by Lila Bear, Kathleen Cain, Robert Cooperman, Megan de Guzman, David Anthony Martin, George McWhirter, Thomas Reeve, Linda Whittenberg, and Jon Kelly Yenser. We’re excited not only because of the issue’s powerful poetry but because the new format allows readers to comment on the poems. Comments will be curated so that published observations serve both the poets and other readers.Read More

Kathleen on Great Blasket Island
Don’t miss this luminous essay by my friend, the poet, essayist, editor, and all-around proclaimer of joy Kathleen Cain. “Shocked into shivers of mute reverence” indeed.Read More

Submission…
After a long hiatus I’m back to submitting poems to journals and peddling a new book-length collection to publishers. The process is ugly, not just because it’s tedious or because it involves rejection (hell, I eat rejection for breakfast!), but because the more I read and re-read my own work the worse it looks.Read More

Reflections on Reflections on RANE
I was fortunate in being asked to travel to Taos and join with a number of other poets to celebrate the life and work of the late Taos-based artist Bill Rane at the Rane Gallery, admirably run by his wife, Judith. The event, “Reflections on RANE,” took place on Saturday, September 22, in the Gallery itself. Each of the poets had picked a painting of Bill’s to write about—or from—or around! Anyway, the exchange of impressions was exhilarating, not least because the fine poets involved proved to be equally wonderful as people and artists.Read More
