Friday Notebook 04.22.2011
“Recently I have been contemplating and speaking about the relationship between truth and fact.” —Kwame Dawes at Harriet Mr. Dawes’s post got me to thinking about truth and fact, mainly because I think he misses the point. Facts and truths, it seems to me, are in no way opposed to one another. Facts, I think, are like notes, and truth is like music: it’s the relationship between different notes that make music, and it’s the relationship between different facts that make truths. Music is a species of truth, poetry is another species of it, fiction another, and so on.Read More

Another New Article in My Series on “The Poem’s Force”
Encouraged by Annie Wyndham’s enthusiasm for my last Poem’s Force article (see my previous post), I finished a new one that had been in slow progress for quite awhile. Her AmeriQuebeckian “jottings” are always a pleasure to read, and I’m glad she found something of value in what I had to say. I sometimes wonder if these articles (and these blog entries) are worth writing–that is, if what I have to say is worth writing down. It’s good to know that my effort to be of use is occasionally … well … useful.Read More

Golden (?) Oldie
This essay appeared 20 years ago in a collection of essays and poems called Tracks in the Snow: Essays by Colorado Poets, edited by the tireless Ray Gonzalez for his Mesilla Press imprint (now defunct, I believe). I’ve made a few small edits and links, but am offering it up mostly as was, in the brooding mood that confronting passed time always inspires in me. POETIC JUSTICE Sitting Down to Write As I sat down this morning to write, the sun outside my office window was low, corpulent, dyed an eerie orange by smoke blown down from fires in Wyoming.Read More
