Sherwood Anderson (22 November 1935) |
A fine piece here about one of my favorite writers, Sherwood Anderson, with an ending that seems entirely appropriate, if Anderson had been one of his own “grotesques”:
His death was absurd. In 1941, just before departing for a South American trip, he attended a drinks party and accidentally swallowed a toothpick from an hors d’oeuvres. On board ship he was subsequently taken ill and died in Panama from peritonitis. The headline for his obituary in the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram read: “Sherwood Anderson, Former Elyria Manufacturer, Dies”
Sigh…
