I just heard about Mr. Connells passing. I feared. No not feared, it was coming. I knew. But I hoped for another book. I have read and collected everything by him since I first discovered his books in 1980. "The White lantern", "Notes from a Bottle Found on a Beach at Carmel". Ed! If the top of your head has flown out the window you can wait until morning to pick it up. That Connell! I'm reading his second novel, The Patriot (1960), at the moment. A portrait of how a kid who signs up to be a WWII Navy Aviator arrives at pacifism. After the domestic drama of Mrs. Bridge, it's no surprise this book didn't find the audience it deserves.

I haven't in fact read anything by Evan S. Connell, though I really like the movie Mr. and Mrs. Bridge made from his novels. It's a lovingly done film, and a delight to see Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in the lead roles.

I mean, how can you not like a movie that lists, among the closing credits, Senator Robert Dole of Kansas as Paul Newman's Shakespeare coach.

his "Notes from a Bottle …" is one of the two or three dozen (poetry) books that I yet have from the 60's !

that opening stanza … THAT first line
of that opening piece that you re-use

should be up on every poet's "wall of fame"

and then his :
" I must meditate
further on this."

me two !<br

The rare writers recede at an ever alarming rate of frequency but few miss them, which is even more alarming.
