    I think you’re right, Glenn—though I’m not sure what "gorgeous muckiness" means! Someone whose name I’ve forgotten wrote that poets tend to "make it new" either by bringing fresh material into poems—material previously considered "unpoetic"—or by expanding the formal possibilities of verse. Olds—like Edna St. Vincent Millay, for example—does the the former. It may be that some formal invention

    I like Sharon Olds even though when reading one of her books I frequently groan and suppress the urge to hurl it across the room. Her flaw is her strength, this gorgeous muckiness both in subject and language.

    I recently read Strike Sparks as well. It was good.<BR/><BR/>I like these types of posts too. I need to start visiting used book stores.
