Great stuff, Joe. I am excited to begin reading these, as that question is always floating around in my head and I’ve been doing a lot of internal digging and exploring what the answer is for me.

So nice to see/hear someone of your knowledge and sensitivity articulating what has been annoying me for a long time. Our culture (and our poetry) has lost its narrative, replaced by incoherent flashes of light, unrelated images, self serving tweets of banalities.

Thanks Joe. And thanks for putting us on to Alexander.

This seems a more complete explanation of the “smartypants MFA poetry” that has annoyed me for years — in which highfalutin obscurity is apparently a means for impressing other academics. What other purpose could it serve? I seldom feel transported by postmodern anything. And any connection to landscape seems wholly lacking. Surely wilderness is always a good place to start, regardless of intention. But even in the most beautiful places (Colorado), place is considered irrelevant.

Thanks for this post. The book sounds enlightening. I wonder whether the author sees our culture’s fascination with voyeurism (not necessarily sexual, but generally) as eclipsing our ability to appreciate any art besides fragmentary art.
