    Thanks, Lyle. I'll follow up on those links. And I'm with you—the spider is outside. There are a number of ways to read the poem, but unless you insist on an allusion to Whitman or Frost or some other's spider poem, it seems extremely slight. But then I spent half of last year reading Basho, who rarely–through writing very short poems–ever wrote a slight one.
