I’ll be reading with some local fellow poets, including the wonderful Rachel Kellum, in the Bloedorn Lecture Hall at Morgan Community College from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16th, then conducting a poetry workshop the following day from noon to 2:00 p.m.
A recent survey* of national trends shows that just 6.7% of American’s read a work of poetry last year; but if 6.7% of Fort Morgan’s 11,000 residents (about 737 people), we’ll could spark a nationwide poetry-reading revolution right from the heart of Morgan County!
Two Off-to-the-Side Thoughts…
First, I discovered that the popular jazz-influenced band leader Glenn Miller came of age in Fort Morgan, having moved there with his family in 1918. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1921 and went to the University of Colorado, from which he soon dropped out to devote himself to dance band music and his chosen instrument, the trombone. A gold star for any Fort Morgan area poet who can perform a trombone poem at the open mic!
Second, in looking for an image of Fort Morgan for this post I ran across what must be the inspiration for a very famous painting—and it augers well for a very creative evening:
