A bit late in seeing this? However, in 1968 or ’69 as a 13 year old boy I was given ‘worms and the wind’ as a punishment exercise. Being a bit of a wild boy I forgot to do it but had an hour bus run to school and read and commented on this, as I was writing, ‘a wee light went on’ and I enjoyed poetry. The teacher was pleasantly surprised by my effort and I couldn’t get enough English classes.

It was when I was 14 years old, after a teacher showed me a few poems by Sandburg (in some standard junior high school English reader of the time), and played an LP recording of Sandburg reading a few of his poems, that (either later that day or later that week) I decided to be a poet, and started writing poems.

That was in the fall of 1968. I'll bet none of you have spent as much time as I have in Galesburg, Illinois, the birthplace, of course, of Carl Sandburg.

Or in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, for that matter, the hometown of Lorine Niedecker.

Just wanted to throw a little taunt down for the weekend.

So chew on it.

Kent

Don: Ok, ok … how rude! I might have guessed the 10th edition, but who's counting?

And Ed: I was in what was called "College English," meaning we were all college-bound know-it-alls. This was 1967-68. The teacher was Vernice Van Duzer—I <a href="https://www.jhwriter.com/Docs/FistsAndFlashingEyes.pdf" rel="nofollow">wrote about her many years ago—and think of her
