    No translation can efface the self-centredness of Grass's poem. Shabtai's poems are not about himself and his own problems; even "War" is not about himself.

    I agree! Although Shabtai's power, I'm sure, owes a lot to Peter Cole, his excellent translator. Maybe Grass's poem will attract a superior translator one day soon–though I imagine his poem wiLl still suffer by comparison.

    Thanks for your own courage in posting this, Joseph. Sad that you need to clarify that opposing Israel&#39;s brutality does not mean support for fundamentalism of Iran, but such is the state of current political discourse, which is dismal.
